Two further Derby goals after the break put the game well out of United’s reach. The trio of Bjorn Hardley, Calen Gallagher-Allison and Hannibal Mejbri – all 16-year-olds – were called up to make their full Under-18 debuts in place of Connor Stanley, the suspended Reece Devine and Will Fish, who had made an impressive bow for the Under-23s against Fulham the previous evening at Leigh.
OTTAWA — British Columbia is getting attention from three federal party leaders today, including the promise of a “new deal” from the NDP’s Jagmeet Singh.Singh has already promised to cede authority in several areas to Quebec, including on the environment, immigration and justice, as part of his vision for more asymmetric federalism, in which the provinces don’t all have the same relationship with the federal government.Singh is also to meet with Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart, the former NDP MP whose old seat Singh now holds.Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is starting his day in Delta, B.C., where he’s expected to make another announcement on the environment before flying back east to a rally in Thunder Bay, Ont.And People’s Party of Canada Leader Maxime Bernier begins a western tour, his first extended trip of the campaign, with an appearance at the Surrey, B.C., board of trade.Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer is campaigning in Quebec and Green Leader Elizabeth May is to reveal the financials behind her party’s platform in Halifax.Trudeau has been trying hard to paint Scheer as backward on environmental issues, especially climate change, by tying him and his opposition to the Liberals’ carbon-pricing policy to unpopular Ontario Premier Doug Ford.He hopes a string of environment-related promises will help draw back some of the support that got shaky after last week’s revelations of his history dressing up in black- and brownface.Singh made climate-change promises of his own Tuesday, including pledging to electrify Canada’s public-transit fleets by the end of the next decade and to construct a coast-to-coast clean-energy corridor.Trudeau’s climate-change policies are hypocritical, the NDP said, considering the $4.5-billion the government spent to buy the Trans Mountain oil-pipeline project.Trudeau and Singh did speak late Tuesday about the times Trudeau darkened his skin for costumes, but neither camp would say just what they talked about.Scheer, meanwhile, has mostly been playing his own game in central Canada, talking about undoing Liberal changes to the tax treatment small corporations get and eliminating regulations. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 25, 2019.The Canadian Press

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Officials with local grassroots organization Fort St. John for LNG will be hosting a truck rally ahead of next weekend’s rally in the Energetic City supporting the development of a liquified natural gas export industry in B.C.FSJ for LNG founder Alan Yu says that the rally is planned for April 21st, a day over two years since its last rally which saw then-Premier Christy Clark make an appearance. The rally will take place at the corner of 100th St. and 96th Ave., in the parking lot of the old Visitor Information Centre. Vivian Krause is set to deliver a keynote address at this year’s rally. Krause is a controversial Vancouver-based blogger and researcher who has received both praise and condemnation for her research into environmental charities in Canada, particularly their source of funding. In addition to hosting her Fair Questions blog, Krause also writes for The Financial Post.
Tripoli: Forces backing Libya’s unity government battled to push back an offensive by strongman Khalifa Haftar on Sunday as his troops approached the gates of Tripoli after air raids overnight. Haftar’s self-proclaimed Libyan National Army, galvanised by victories in its eastern stronghold and in the country’s desert south, announced an offensive early this month to seize the capital from the UN-recognised administration of Fayez al-Sarraj. But his forces have faced fierce resistance from armed groups backing the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), including powerful factions from the western city of Misrata. At least 227 people have been killed since Haftar’s forces launched their offensive, the World Health Organisation said Sunday, adding that a further 1,128 have been wounded. Clashes intensified on Saturday when forces loyal to the GNA announced a counter-attack. Also Read – Record number of 35 candidates in fray for SL Presidential polls”We have launched a new phase of attack. Orders were given early this morning to advance and gain ground,” said Mustafa al-Mejii, a spokesman for GNA forces. Sustained rocket and shellfire could be heard in several districts of Tripoli on Saturday, after several days of less intense fighting and stalemate on the ground. Explosions were heard from the city centre overnight, and some witnesses reported air strikes. Pope Francis, delivering his traditional Easter message, called for an end to “conflict and bloodshed” that was killing “defenceless people” in Libya. “I urge the parties involved to choose dialogue over force and to avoid reopening wounds left by a decade of conflicts and political instability,” he said. Tripoli air traffic was suspended overnight to Sunday for “security reasons”, the city’s only operating airport said Sunday. At least two flights were re-routed from Mitiga airport to Misrata, more than 200 kilometres (125 miles) to the east, the airport’s authorities said on their Facebook page. They said flights had resumed early in the morning to Mitiga, east of the capital. The former military airbase was hit by an air strike on April 8, claimed by the LNA, and has since only operated between 5:00 pm and 8:00 am (1500 and 0600 GMT). The GNA counter-attack put pro-government forces back in control of Ain Zara, in the southern suburbs of Tripoli, where an AFP team confirmed pro-GNA forces had advanced, shifting the front line a few kilometres south. GNA spokesman Mejii told AFP on Sunday morning that “after a long day of military success, our forces are consolidating their (new) positions.” Some witnesses spoke of air raids and drones, but Mejii said the blasts were caused by strikes from LNA helicopters aimed at “terrorising civilians”. He said they had not caused any casualties but had taken place away from the front lines, without offering any further details. Military sources say the ageing Soviet and Russian fighter jets used by both sides are not equipped to carry out night time strikes, but Mejii said Haftar’s forces have a helicopter with night vision capabilities. The UN’s Libya envoy warned Thursday of “a widening conflagration” in the North African country. Ghassan Salame told AFP that “international divisions” prior to the assault on Tripoli had emboldened Haftar, who is backed by Russia and seen by his allies Egypt and the United Arab Emirates as a bulwark against Islamists. The White House revealed Friday that US President Donald Trump reached out personally to Haftar, as a push at the United Nations to broker a ceasefire hit trouble. A statement said that Trump “recognised Field Marshal Haftar’s significant role in fighting terrorism and securing Libya’s oil resources,” adding that “the two discussed a shared vision for Libya’s transition to a stable, democratic political system.” Observers saw Trump’s words of praise for the strongman as evidence of US support that explains Haftar’s determination to pursue his offensive to seize Tripoli. On Thursday, Russia and the United States opposed a British bid backed by France and Germany at the UN Security Council to demand a ceasefire in Libya. Russia insisted on having no criticism of Haftar in the proposed resolution, while the United States said it wanted more time to consider the situation.

The Ohio State-Michigan football rivalry is a passionate subject for many, and Columbus radio host Scott Torgerson let that passion get the better of him. Torgerson, a co-host of “The Common Man and The Torg” show on WBNS 97.1 The Fan in Columbus, was suspended by the radio station after wishing death on former Michigan football star and current ESPN analyst Desmond Howard. The suspension is indefinite, according to multiple reports. Howard currently works as a co-host for ESPN’s traveling, live college football show, “College GameDay.” 97.1 The Fan also happens to be an ESPN affiliate. From his Twitter account, @myguythetorg, Torgerson tweeted Saturday: “I wish Desmond Howard would get fired or die so I can watch Gameday again.” Torgerson later issued an apology on Twitter, saying: “My Desmond Howard tweet was a joke. I think if you listen to the show you know that. My apologizes to those who took it serious. Total joke.” The apology arrived too late for Kirk Herbstreit and Howard’s wife. Herbstreit, an ESPN analyst, co-host of “College GameDay” with Howard, and former OSU quarterback, criticized Torgerson during “The Kirk Herbstreit Show,” which airs on 97.1 The Fan. “I think what Desmond Howard had to deal with over the weekend is disgusting and very sad,” Herbstreit said. “I don’t know the reason behind it, but the tweet from an individual that works at the radio station was above and beyond, I think, what was acceptable … There’s so much more I wish I could say about that and I’ll choose not to … To me he crossed a line and that’s just completely unacceptable.” Howard’s wife, Rebkah Howard, responded to Torgerson on Twitter as well. From Rebkah Howard’s Twitter account, @pink_funk, she said: “(thanks) for the ‘apologizes’. Are you fortunate enough to be a father? Know who didn’t get your ‘total (dead) joke’? Our daughter.” Torgerson did not immediately respond to The Lantern’s Tuesday request for comment.
Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has been referred to medical experts in Boston after the 24-year-old German visited Massachusetts General Hospital and was diagnosed with concussion five days after the Champions League final.Karius made terrible mistakes during the first and third goals that gave Madrid a 3-1 win at Kiev. Karius clashed with Spanish defender Sergio Ramos, although in a statement released with the player’s permission yesterday, doctors did not tell whether or not that incident caused the goalkeeper concussion. However, Dr Ross Zafonte said it was “possible” the injury “would affect performance”.Zafonte, who is a leading expert in head injuries in the NFL, said Karius’ assessment involved reviewing “game film”, a “physical examination” and “objective metrics”, according to BBC.He continued that it was “likely” that “visual-spatial dysfunction” which hampers a person’s ability to process visual information about where objects are in space, would have occurred immediately after the event that caused the concussion.Report: Origi cause Klopp injury concerns George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Divock Origi injury in today’s game against Newcastle is a cause for concern for Jurgen Klopp.Perhaps with one eye on Tuesday’s trip to Italy…Dr Willie Stewart, a consultant neuropathologist at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, said a delay in the concussion diagnosis is “not surprising”.“How did he get concussed and we didn’t know?“The obvious signs of concussion can take hours and days to develop, so it’s not surprising that it might be picked up after the match.”

It doesn’t matter who is playing and who isn’t, because the team is very competitive.”

Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch which seemed conducive for stroke play. India got off to a stellar start as Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul put together a superb century stand for the first wicket. While Rahul was not entirely fluent, Rohit Sharma was at his best and after he was put down by Tamim Iqbal on 9, he never looked back.He galloped along to his fourth century in the World Cup and thus equalled the feat of former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara as the player to have scored four centuries in one single edition of the World Cup. Sangakkara smashed four centuries on the bounce in the last edition in 2015. Overall, the Indian opener now has five centuries in World Cup and is now tied with former Australian captain Ricky Ponting and is one century short of Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar, who has 6 centuries to his name. Rohit joined Sachin Tendulkar in an exclusive list Rohit SharmaICC TwitterAlso, during this innings, Rohit joined Sachin Tendulkar in an exclusive club as the Indian opener became the second Indian batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to score 500 runs in a single edition of the World Cup. The batting icon achieved this feat twice during the course of his illustrious career (673 runs in 2003 and 523 runs in 1996).It has been a brilliant tournament for Rohit so far as he started the campaign with a brilliant unbeaten 122 against South Africa and followed it up with 57 against defending champions Australia. He then smacked a superb century against Pakistan in Manchester. After stuttering in the two matches against Afghanistan and West Indies, he hit form again in the match against England, where he scored 102.Despite India’s stellar start and a solid platform, the middle order stuttered once again and Mustafizur bagged a 5-wicket haul as Bangladesh managed to pull things back considerably as India could only manage 314. Rohit SharmaICC TwitterSpeaking at the end of the innings, KL Rahul said that the pitch was slow where the bowlers can restrict the scoring and apply pressure on the batsmen.”It will come and it is due. (The surface is) Pretty similar to what we played on a couple of days ago against England. It is really slow. The bowlers have bowled here before and know what lengths to bowl, what pace to bowl and hopefully, we will come out and execute our plans,” Rahul said after the Indian innings.
Share Robin Jerstad for The Texas TribuneState Senator Carlos Uresti, D-San Antonio, at a Texas Tribune legislative preview on Dec. 2, 2016. Uresti’s San Antonio office was raided by the FBI on Feb. 16, 2017.Editor’s note: This story has been updated throughout.State Sen. Carlos Uresti, accused of misleading a former client who invested in a company in which Uresti has a financial stake, was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury on 11 charges over his involvement in the alleged investment Ponzi scheme, and he also faces a separate indictment alleging bribery surrounding a government contract. In the first indictment, the federal grand jury charged Uresti, a San Antonio Democrat, with eleven counts of wrongdoing over his complicated saga involving a now-bankrupt company. The company, FourWinds Logistics, purported to sell sand used in hydraulic fracturing, a process that extracts oil and gas from shale rock, but has been accused of misleading investors and grossly misspending funds. The grand jury indicted Uresti on one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud; one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering; five substantive counts of wire fraud; two counts of securities fraud; one count of engaging in monetary transactions with property derived from specified unlawful activity; and one count of being an unregistered securities broker.A separate indictment centered on a contract to provide medical services to a correctional facility in West Texas. That indictment alleges that a colleague of Uresti’s, Vernon C. Farthing III, paid Uresti $10,000 per month as a marketing consultant and that half of the money was given to an unspecified Reeves County official to win over his vote to award the contract to Farthing’s company. It was the culmination of a 10-year scheme to commit bribery and money laundering, prosecutors argued. In a prepared statement, Uresti said he would plea not guilty to the charges.“I am hard at work representing District 19 in the 85th Legislative Session,” he said. “The charges against me are groundless and I look forward to proving my innocence in a court of law at the appropriate time.”It was the frack sand case that received the most scrutiny in recent months.A lengthy investigation published by the Express-News in August first detailed the involvement of Uresti, a personal injury attorney, in the company and fraud allegations it faces.FourWinds’ supposed intent was to buy sand and sell it at a markup to oil and gas companies, but investors have accused the company’s leadership of misrepresenting its financial health and spending their money on frivolous, personal expenses. It now faces millions of dollars in claims from investors and other companies.Uresti’s alleged wrongdoings trace back to one of his previous legal clients. Uresti represented Denise Cantu in a wrongful-death case after Cantu’s 13-year-old daughter, four-year-old son and two friends were killed in 2010, when a tire on her SUV blew out, causing the vehicle to roll over. Cantu received $900,000 in a settlement, but she said she lost most of the money after she invested it in the now-bankrupt FourWinds firm at Uresti’s suggestion.Cantu has said she was not initially aware that Uresti would get a piece of her investment, though Uresti has suggested otherwise. With allegations of serious financial mismanagement detailed in bankruptcy court, the FBI last year opened an investigation. Federal agents raided Uresti’s law offices in February in connection to the case.Documents in the company’s bankruptcy proceedings list Uresti as owner of a 1 percent stake in FourWinds. Also, the company granted Uresti a $40,000 loan in June of 2014, and hired him to perform legal services, the documents show.At least four former FourWinds employees have now been indicted for their involvement in the company: chief executive Stanley Bates; Eric Nelson, the former marketing director; Shannon Smith, who held a 48 percent stake in the company; and Laura Jacobs, who worked as its comptroller. Gary Cain, a company consultant, was also indicted.Three months after the Express-News story, Uresti coasted to re-election, winning his San Antonio seat with 56 percent of the vote against Republican and Libertarian challengers. Uresti is among the Legislature’s most powerful Democrats. He is vice chair of the Health and Human Services committee and sits on three other high-profile committees: Finance, Education and Veteran Affairs & Border Security.Uresti’s indictments put Texas Democrats in an awkward position. The fraud charges bear similarity to another high-profile case: that of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican. Paxton is similarly charged with misleading investors and failing to register as a securities broker.A spokesman for the Texas Democratic Party did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But Texas GOP chairman Tom Mechler was quick to condemn Uresti in a prepared statement: “As I’ve said before, there is an unprecedented amount of corruption among Texas Democrats, and Senator Uresti’s indictment only further proves that they are clearly incapable of being entrusted with governing in the state of Texas.”Uresti could face up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted of the fraud-related charge, and the money laundering charge carries prison time of up to 10 years. If convicted of being an unregistered securities broker, Uresti could spend up to 20 years in federal prison. In the Reeves County case, Uresti could face up to five years in federal prison if convicted of conspiracy to commit bribery, and up to 20 years if convicted of the money laundering charge.Uresti is expected to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Henry Bemporad at 11 a.m. tomorrow in San Antonio.Julián Aguilar contributed to this report.Read related Tribune coverage:Three members of the Texas Legislature, all Democrats, easily won their re-election bids in November despite a cloud of ethics questions hovering over their campaigns.More than two dozen former elected officials convicted of felonies may be receiving taxpayer-funded retirement pay. ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A sheriff in Maryland has agreed to resign after an investigation found he created a hostile work environment by belittling staffers and making racist and sexist comments, a county official and attorneys announced Tuesday.Howard County Sheriff James Fitzgerald’s last day in office will be Saturday, said Calvin Ball, the chairman of the county council. The sheriff then must retire after 30 days. The agreement also calls for him to reinstate former Lt. Charles Gable, who filed a retaliation complaint a year ago against the sheriff and resigned in February.Howard County Sheriff James Fitzgerald. (Courtesy photo)“He was universally described as vindictive, arrogant, narcissistic, rude, belligerent, nasty and intimidating,” the 48-page report by the county’s Office of Human Rights said of the sheriff. The sheriff denied engaging in discriminatory misconduct, describing himself to investigators as just “a loud New Yorker,” the report said. The report found reasonable cause that Fitzgerald discriminated against Gable, who is white, by retaliating against him through scheduling because Gable didn’t support his political campaign for sheriff. The agreement also calls for Gable to receive $58,350 in back pay.Joseph Mallon, an attorney for Gable, said the sheriff has signed an agreement to resign under the stipulations. While the investigation centered on Gable’s complaint, it found the sheriff engaged in a pattern of belittling people by using racist language with black employees and anti-Semitic language as well, once referring to former County Executive Ken Ulman as “little Kenny Jew-boy.”The investigation noted a variety of offensive comments: “There’s no watermelon there for you!” the sheriff reportedly told an African-American at a buffet. On another occasion, while eating with a group, he turned to a black deputy and said: “Are you getting the ‘chicken’ special?” The report found he also said black deputies “are not too smart but they get the job done,” and to the president of the Retired Police Officer’s Association, he said: “I voted for your ‘boy’ Obama,” referring to President Barack Obama.Ball said he approached Fitzgerald seeking his voluntary departure.“Soon after I read the report and was so concerned about what I had read, I reached out to the sheriff to start talking with him about the importance of starting to heal our community and that he needed to leave that office in order for that to happen,” Ball, who is black, said in an interview after announcing the agreement.Elected officials from both parties condemned the sheriff’s comments after the report was made public last month. Republican Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman had asked members of the county’s delegation to the Democrat-controlled General Assembly to explore impeaching the sheriff, and lawmakers planned to bring impeachment proceedings against Fitzgerald, who is a Democrat, if he did not resign.Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, said he too was “very disturbed.”“I do believe he should resign, and I share the opinions of many other people that think he should resign,” Hogan said earlier Tuesday, before the agreement was announced.Howard County, located between the nation’s capital and the city of Baltimore, is one of the nation’s wealthiest counties, with more than 310,000 residents and one of the nation’s most educated workforces.
Kolkata: In a significant improvement in the social security schemes for the workers in unorganised sectors, the Bengal government has completed the digitalisation of data of more than 55 lakh beneficiaries in the state so far.The state Labour department, the implementing authority of the Samajik Suraksha Yojana (SSY), has set a target to include 1.2 crore beneficiaries within the schemes, aiming to provide income security and various social benefits to the people engaged in unorganised sectors. Also Read – Heavy rain hits traffic, flightsSSY schemes were introduced by the state government in 2017, following the initiative of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who laid an emphasis on the improvement of socio-economic conditions of the people working in various unorganised sectors. Prodded by the Chief Minister, the state Labour department chalked out an elaborate plan for a comprehensive coverage of social benefits. The various schemes that are falling under the SSY are State Assisted Scheme of Provident Fund for Unorganised Workers (SASPFUW), West Bengal Unorganised Sector Workers Health Security Scheme (WBUSWHSS), Social Security Scheme for Construction Workers (BOCWA), West Bengal Transport Workers Social Security Scheme (WBTWSSS) and West Bengal Bidi Workers’ Welfare Scheme (WBBWWS). To provide uniform benefits to each and every unorganised worker, the common benefits of all these schemes were integrated and converged into a single and more comprehensive scheme for the benefits of the beneficiaries, many of whom are illiterate. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Merc, 2 B’deshi bystanders killedAs per the latest available report, digitalisation work has been done for 55,39,368 beneficiaries in the state so far. According to sources in the Labour department, many more beneficiaries have already been brought under the SSY schemes, the data of whom are yet to be uploaded in the system. The department has a target of bringing 1.2 crore people under this scheme and upload their data in the online system, so that every individual in the state can avail the benefits of the social schemes of the state government. The state government had also received an award in the national arena for the conceptualisation and effective implementation of the schemes, a senior official of the department said. SSY is one of the best labour welfare schemes that have brought about a change in the lives of people across the state. The digitalisation of data has helped the department to maintain a centralised information system, where all the information related to any individual is available at the click of a mouse. This will bring more transparency in the system and maintain the records of beneficiaries. Kolkata: In a stride to ensure that jute farmers and labourers get their desired benefits, the Centre will make it mandatory for the mill owners to make their payments in its entirety before getting the entire payment of the government orders. The decision of the Centre comes in the wake of a section of farmers and labourers complaining of not getting the benefits that they deserve. “The jute industry used to get payments against the order regularly. Why are the farmers and labourers complaining about it? Now, we are making it mandatory, that if you do not pay the farmers or labourers or any way abdicate the responsibility, we will not give you the order,” Union Textile minister Smriti Irani said during an interactive session organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce.
