Ohio State mens volleyball caps historic season with teams second national title

Watching Loyola win their second-consecutive championship last season only ignited a fire in the Buckeyes who returned the majority of their key contributors in 2015-16.Then-No. 9 OSU finally faced then-No. 5 Loyola (Ill.) on Feb. 12 in its first match versus the Ramblers since the MIVA semifinals. On the east side of Chicago, Hanson and the determined Buckeyes quickly dispatched the Ramblers on their home court in a three-set victory. From then on, OSU rattled off 23 straight victories culminating in a final triumph on Saturday night. The Buckeyes continually added match upon match to the win column only going five sets four times for the rest of the season. Finishing with a three-set victory over the No. 1 BYU Cougars in Rec Hall on the ground of Pennsylvania State University, the Buckeyes ended the 2015-16 campaign with an exclamation mark and another NCAA championship, the second in six years. It was the same consistent play on Saturday night in the national championship match that has carried Hanson’s squad all season. Junior opposite hitter Miles Johnson tallied 15 kills, redshirt junior Driss Guessous added 10 kills and National Player of the Year Nicolas Szerszen had 10 thunderous kills to aid in the quick defeat of the Cougars.Perhaps the most surprising performance came from redshirt freshman Blake Leeson, who had a career high 11 kills on the night. The 6-foot-7 middle blocker was dominant in the middle for OSU, getting early touches on balls to give his team another chance to get the ball onto the powerful hand of Szerszen. But on the final point, Leeson took advantage of a high set from junior setter Christy Blough and sealed the Buckeyes destiny as national champions. Each match during the win streak has seen one or more Buckeyes answering the call to push them over the top. In the MIVA championship game that went five sets, senior outside hitter Peter Edwards stroked seven straight points from the service stripe closing out the team’s first NCAA tournament berth since its last national title in 2011.Coming into the tournament ranked at No. 2 in the country, OSU was given the task of playing a play-in game to earn the right to clash with UCLA in the final four. Some felt the Buckeyes were snubbed not earning an automatic bid to the final four, but Hanson focused his team to a resounding victory over George Mason.OSU pummeled GMU in three sets (25-22, 25-19, 25-22) in January, but the Buckeyes fell behind after one set in the quarterfinal. The nine service errors in the first set were completely uncharacteristic of the steady Buckeyes. Following the final point in the first set, OSU came out firing and didn’t seem bothered with dropping the first set. Szerszen led OSU with 20 kills and 16 digs in the match, propelling the Buckeyes to their 21st consecutive win.In the national semifinal versus UCLA, it was same story, different match for OSU and the National Player of the Year. Szerszen was limited to 15 kills on the night as the Bruins defense keyed in on the 6-foot-4 outside hitter. Johnson was monumental on the attack for the Buckeyes, collecting 20 kills in the match to pick up the slack when Szerszen couldn’t produce. But at 17-16 in extra points in the final set, OSU’s best player was separated from blockers toeing the service stripe and ripped home a berth to the national championship.Ranked No. 1 in the country with a record of 27-4, the BYU Cougars proved no match for the highly touted Buckeyes, who were simply unstoppable for more than half of the season. OSU capped off an extra-points victory in set one, winning 32-30 in dramatic fashion. That was all the drama Rec Hall saw that night. Hanson and his nearly invincible team finished off the Cougars 25-23 and 25-17.OSU started the ‘15-’16 campaign at 1-2 after dropping a four-set match against then-No. 5 UCLA. In his 32nd season as OSU’s leader on the sideline, the tenured Hanson turned his team around to an aggressive, attacking team that prided itself on dominant victories. From then on, the Buckeyes dropped just one five-set match versus then-No.14 Ball State, which ended up being the team’s only conference loss.Perhaps the biggest turnover of the season was evident away from Columbus. Last season, seven of OSU’s nine losses came on the road. This season, OSU was undefeated at 11-0 away from St. John Arena and only went the distance in one match at then-No. 6 Penn State.Hanson was named NCAA Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career, and he proudly lifted the championship trophy for the second time in his career. And like in 2011, cheers from the OSU fan base and his triumphant team filled Rec Hall to end a season to remember. read more

Nearly 22 Percent Of Harris County Is Uninsured

first_imgPhoto via PixabayTexas has the highest rate of nonelderly residents without health insurance in the country.Harris County’s uninsured rate is slightly higher than the Texas average, according to a new report by the Urban Institute.Texas has the highest rate of nonelderly residents without health insurance in the country — nearly 20 percent of the population under 65 is uninsured. But according to the report, Harris County’s uninsured rate is slightly above the Texas average at 22 percent. Nationwide, roughly 11 percent of the nonelderly population is uninsured.“So the statewide is high and there are some localities with very high concentrations of uninsured people,” Matt Buettgens, a senior fellow in the Urban Institute’s Health Policy Center, told Houston Matters. “If you look at different areas of Harris County, you have some suburban areas where the rate is a little over 10% and you have some areas not very far away where the rate is something around 30%.”Buettgens said the discrepancies are due to factors like income distribution, ethnicity, educational level, and citizenship status. “All of those things vary in complex ways, particularly in large urban areas,” he said. “So it’s important to keep track of that, both for policy makers and for people in the local communities doing outreach or for healthcare providers.”Statewide, the report found that over 70% of the uninsured have incomes below 200% of the poverty level, but two thirds are in working families. And 56% of the uninsured are in families that have at least one full-time worker.“So having workers in the family, even full time workers, is not enough to guarantee access to health coverage,” Buettgens said. The study also found that nearly 70 percent of the uninsured in Texas aren’t eligible for financial assistance in obtaining health coverage.“Given that most also have very low incomes, it will be extremely difficult for them to pay the full cost of private health insurance themselves,” he said. “So certainly expanding access to financial assistance for getting coverage is important, and the Medicaid expansion issue is probably the most immediate policy debate that comes to mind there.”Texas was one of 17 states that chose not to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Centre to pay jute mills only after full payment to farmers labourers

first_imgKolkata: In a stride to ensure that jute farmers and labourers get their desired benefits, the Centre will make it mandatory for the mill owners to make their payments in its entirety before getting the entire payment of the government orders. The decision of the Centre comes in the wake of a section of farmers and labourers complaining of not getting the benefits that they deserve. “The jute industry used to get payments against the order regularly. Why are the farmers and labourers complaining about it? Now, we are making it mandatory, that if you do not pay the farmers or labourers or any way abdicate the responsibility, we will not give you the order,” Union Textile minister Smriti Irani said during an interactive session organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeThe jute industry, according to the minister has a ready order worth Rs 5,000-5,500 crore every year (in terms of sacking). “We give such huge orders so that the jute industry stays alive. The sum is given to the jute industry in terms of order so that the farmers and labourers can get the benefits out of it,” she maintained. Irani urged the industry to go for innovation and come forward in taking new initiatives and said the Centre has been focusing on how to transform small size firms into mid-size entities. Elaborating on innovation, she touched upon technical textiles that are finding its application in automobiles, interior decoration, healthcare, industrial safety among others. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killedIrani said the industry should work closely with the government so that the policies framed by the latter may be implemented effectively. Later, addressing the Annual General Meeting at the Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce, she said the government has increased the import duty on some textile products to protect domestic manufacturing. “India looks at the trade war between China and the US as an opportunity and not as a challenge. India would be benefited from the trade war not only through policy intervention but also through industry practices,” she added.last_img read more

Cut in two The lengthening process of Silverseas Silver Spirit

first_imgCut in two: The lengthening process of Silversea’s Silver SpiritCut in two: The lengthening process of Silversea’s Silver SpiritA great spectacle of naval engineering, Silversea’s Silver Spirit has been cut in two at Fincantieri Shipyard in Palermo as part of her planned lengthening.  A prebuilt 15-metre (49-feet) segment has been inserted and the ship is now being reconnected. With the aim of amplifying guests’ on-board experience, the rare lengthening project will create more space in public areas and will enhance Silver Spirit’s facilities.  Leoluca Orlando, the Mayor of Palermo welcomed the ship, and members of the international press, representatives of Silversea and Fincantieri, and other VIP guests were in attendance at two celebratory ceremonies, as the ship’s transformation got underway in Sicily on 10 and 11 March. An air of excitement was cast over the shipyard as those present witnessed the dissection of the 36,009-ton ship, as well as the manoeuvering of the vast new mid-section into place.  These important stages of the project ran with military precision, which pays testament to the quality of operations at the world-leading Fincantieri Shipyard.  A rarely performed feat of maritime architecture, this type of lengthening has never before been employed for the extension of a luxury cruise ship.“Witnessing these breathtaking phases of the Silver Spirit lengthening project has filled us with pride and excitement,” said Barbara Muckermann, chief marketing officer of Silversea.  “This ambitious project will amplify the on-board features that matter most to our guests.  We are taking our flagship, Silver Muse – which was delivered by Fincantieri in April last year – as the point of inspiration for a fleet-wide renovation programme.  The lengthening and refurbishment of Silver Spirit will replicate the modern elegance of our latest vessel to make for a more luxurious travelling experience.  We are eager to share the new and improved layout of our cherished ship with our valued guests.”Over 500 skilled workers will spend approximately 450,000 man hours completing the ambitious project, which is due to conclude on 5 May 2018, and will see Silver Spirit lengthened to 210.7m (691.3 ft.).  Approximately 846 tons of steel, 110,000m (360,892 ft.) of cabling, and 8,000m (26,247 ft.) of piping will be put to use in the lengthening, as Silver Spirit’s capacity increases by roughly 12 percent, resulting in an overall dining capacity increase of 15 percent and a 20 percent increase in outdoor seating (from 200 to 266).A new 8-restaurant configuration will replace the existing culinary infrastructure, with varying dining concepts introduced: Atlantide, Indochine, Silver Note, Spaccanapoli, will complement the pre-existing Seishin, La Dame, La Terrazza and The Grill.Outside, the pool area on the sky deck will increase in length (from 30 to 45m / 98 to 148 ft.) to offer additional space for relaxing under the sun and a new aerobics area will also be created.  Inside, the Zagara Spa concept will be installed, as will a new free weights room which will complement the upgraded fitness centre.  The Arts Café and Dolce Vita – two new, sophisticated public spaces – will improve the on-board entertainment options.  All suites will be refurbished to ensure the trademark Silversea level of quality is maintained.Prior to Silver Spirit’s arrival in Palermo, the ship docked in Chania, Crete, where Silversea made a charitable donation of used furniture to a number of the island’s worthy causes.  As a destination visited by Silversea’s cruises and as an island in need, Chania was identified as a deserving recipient of the donation.  In total, 11 containers were filled with 4,652 items from the ship – including sofas, chairs, curtains, computers, and more.  The donated articles will be put to use for social welfare purposes in hospitals, nursing homes, schools and other institutions across the island. Impacting on the lives of many, the gesture from Silversea will strengthen relations between the cruise company and the island’s authorities at a time when Chania’s social structures need all the help they can get.Not only will Silver Spirit increase in length, but she will also increase in comfort.  From an enhancement and a re-imagination of the ship’s public spaces to an increase in the number and quality of suites, each aspect of the lengthening project has been designed with guest enjoyment in mind.  Based on the chic décor found aboard Silver Muse, Silver Spirit will benefit from beautiful interior design upgrades throughout.Departing on 6 May, 2018, Silver Spirit will recommence her service with a seven-day cruise between Civitavecchia (Rome) and Barcelona.  Fares start at AUD$9, 100* per person, based on double occupancy in a Deluxe Veranda Suite with special savings available for those booking before 31 March.–       View the itinerary here–       Discover more information about the refurbished Silver Spirit–       Watch the video here*Voyages and special offers are subject to change and may be withdrawn at any time.  Terms and conditions apply. For more information contact your travel professional or Silversea Cruises on +61 2 9255 0600 or 0800 701 427 (New Zealand), or visit www.silversea.comSource = Silversea Cruiseslast_img read more

Rep Glenn testifies on bill preventing conflicts of interest in wind farm

first_img Categories: Glenn News,News 12Dec Rep. Glenn testifies on bill preventing conflicts of interest in wind farm deals Rep. Gary Glenn (R-Williams Township), chair of the Michigan House Energy Policy Committee, testified today on his bill preventing conflicts of interest for local officials related to potential wind farm developments.Glenn’s bill would prohibit members of local government planning commissions from voting on issues on which they or their families have direct financial interests. The bill includes strong provisions to make sure local officials can’t vote to allow wind projects if those officials would personally profit because they have already signed a wind lease contract on their own private property.Failure to disqualify themselves from such votes would constitute grounds for removal from office and could result in a felony charge and fines.“Public officials should act in the public’s best interests – not their own financial interests,” Glenn said after testifying on his bill. “Government officials shouldn’t be voting on wind farm developments if they stand to personally profit from the projects.”The legislation would apply to any potential conflict of interest situation where a planning commission member has a direct financial interest. According to testimony Tuesday, conflict of interest concerns have surfaced in several proposed wind farm locations in Michigan.Glenn’s bill would strengthen current law regarding conflicts of interest at the local government level.“Existing law has not sufficiently addressed this issue,” Glenn said. “We need legislation with some teeth in it. We cannot have situations where members of a government board would be allowed to vote on a project that would pay them $1,000 or more a month if the project is approved.”Glenn said the need for this measure has been heightened because of the state’s mandate that 15 percent of all energy come from renewable sources.Glenn added that he wants to ensure decision-making authority regarding commercial wind projects remains in the hands of local officials or local residents themselves.“These decisions about whether to allow wind energy developments should be made at the local level, and they should be made with integrity and without conflict of interest,” Glenn said.House Bill 4968 remains in the Energy Policy Committee.###last_img read more
